Korede Akindele: Sarcoma May Be Rare But Survival Shouldn’t Be

Korede Akindele, Chief Operating Officer at The Dorcas Cancer Foundation, shared a post on LinkedIn:

Sarcomas are rare, but their impact on health systems is significant, especially in low- and middle-income countries where pediatric oncology capacity remains limited.

In many of these settings, delays in the diagnosis and treatment of childhood sarcomas like Ewing Sarcoma are not due to neglect but the result of systemic gaps caused by limited diagnostic infrastructure, insufficient training on early warning signs, weak referral, and care coordination.

These challenges are not unique, and they are not insurmountable.

My work at The Dorcas Cancer Foundation shows how community-based advocacy, health worker education, and multisectoral collaboration can strengthen early detection and improve outcomes.

Sarcoma may be rare. But survival shouldn’t be.

We are building systems that give every child the chance they deserve.”
