“New Risk Score for ICI-Associated Myocarditis: A Step Toward Personalized Cardio-Oncology
A major step forward in cardio-oncology: a new study published in the European Heart Journal introduces the first validated risk score to predict severe myocarditis related to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI).
Developed from data across 748 patients, the score is based on 5 key factors:
• Active thymoma
• Cardio-muscular symptoms
• Low QRS voltage
• Reduced LVEF
• Elevated troponin (graded)Risk stratification was striking:
• Score 0 → only 3.9% had a major event at 30 days
• Score ≥4 → 81.3% experienced a severe outcomeThis score has been externally validated and may guide early risk-adapted management, helping distinguish low-risk patients (possibly avoiding steroids) from those needing intensive care.
A practical and timely tool for oncologists and cardiologists to optimize safety without compromising cancer therapy.”
