Friends of Cancer Research welcomed Monica Bertagnolli to their Board of Directors
Friends of Cancer Research shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Friends of Cancer Research is honored to welcome Dr. Monica Bertagnolli, the 17th Director of the National Institutes of Health, to our Board of Directors!
“Dr. Bertagnolli has built her career on improving the lives of patients through advancing science and public health and increased care,” said Friends’ Chair & Founder, Ellen Sigal. “We are very fortunate to be adding a board member with deep experience as a physician scientist and a patient herself.”
Dr. Bertagnolli was the first surgeon and second woman to serve as NIH Director, the world’s largest funder of biomedical and behavioral research. Her laboratory work has focused on advancing our understanding of the genetic drivers of gastrointestinal cancer development and the role of inflammation as a promoter of cancer growth.

Karen Knudsen, Executive Strategic Advisor and Immediate Past CEO of the American Cancer Society (ACS), reshared the post on LinkedIn, adding:
“Well this is wonderful news!
Terrific choice, Friends of Cancer Research, and congratulations to friend, colleague, and visionary leader Dr. Monica Bertagnolli . Supporting cancer research is more important than ever— advances in cancer science have led to a 34% reduction in cancer mortality rates over the last 3 decades.
We have much more to do as an oncology community to prevent, detect, and treat cancer, and Friends of Cancer Research will play a major role in making that happen.
Congrats, all!”
