Last week at the European Parliament in Brussels, History was made – European Liver Patients’ Association

European Liver Patients’ Association – ELPA shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Last week at the European Parliament in Brussels, history was made!
At the landmark event “Fatty Liver & NCDs: A European Policy Action,” patient voices echoed through the halls of power — demanding awareness, action, and real change.
The Liver Patient Perspective – Navigating Liver Disease Across Borders.
A powerful and emotional call to policymakers, featuring lived experiences and insights from:
  • Yiannoula Koulla (Cyprus) – Chair of ELPA’s SLD Working Group.
  • Lone McColaugh (Denmark).
  • Selly SICKOUT (France).
  • Tarja Teitto-Tuckett (Finland).
  • Moises Serrano Carrillo (Spain) – Hepatitis & liver health advocate.
  • Sindee Weinbaum (Israel).
  • Moderated by Veronika Všeticková (Czech Republic).
From barriers in early diagnosis to unequal access to treatment, these advocates exposed the reality for liver patients across Europe — and offered solutions grounded in lived experience.
With 25% of the population affected by MASLD, this is no longer a silent epidemic — it’s a domino effect impacting both children and adults.
Across borders, patients are united in calling for:
  • Early detection/ screening programs.
  • Education.
  • Multidisciplinary care.
  • Access to innovative medicines.
The message is clear:
The time for fragmented responses is over.
Europe needs coordinated, bold action — now.
Together we are bridging gaps, breaking silence, and building a future where no liver patient is left behind.
This was more than a panel. It was a movement. And it’s only the beginning.”

The European Liver Patients’ Association (ELPA) spotlighted a historic advocacy event at the European Parliament, calling for urgent, coordinated policy action on MASLD. Patient leaders from across Europe shared lived experiences to highlight the systemic gaps in diagnosis, care, and treatment access.
