Enrique Soto: Cancer burden in adults aged 80 and over
Enrique Soto, Geriatric oncologist and Editor-in-Chief of ecancer’s journal, shared on X:
“Looking for a nice read? Take a look at our paper in Cancer Epidemiology on the cancer burden in adults aged >80.
This is a highly vulnerable and increasing population that should be prioritzed!
In 2022, an estimated 2.6 million new cancer cases and 2.1 million cancer deaths occurred in adults aged 80 years or over. There’s a great variation in age-standardised incidence and mortality rates across world regions and income level.
By 2050, the greatest increases in cancer in older adults over 80 years of age (>200 % compared to 2022 estimates) are anticipated in China, India, and Africa. We need to strengthen healthcare systems in LMIC to treat this growing population!
We’ve been saying this for years: geriatric oncology is not a luxury, but a necessity in LMICs. There is still time to prepare, and this should be a priority for all health systems and global organizations!!!”
