Emma Lande – Beating Cancer Twice Before 22 and Inspiring Hope

Life has a way of presenting unexpected challenges, and for Emma Lande, those challenges came in the form of two cancer diagnoses before she even turned 22. Growing up in Snohomish, Washington, Emma was an active and ambitious teenager, excelling in sports, cheerleading, and musical theater. With a bright future ahead, everything seemed promising—until an unexplained health issue changed the course of her life forever.

When Something Feels Off: The First Signs

At 17, Emma began experiencing persistent itching. Initially dismissed as a minor skin irritation, she consulted dermatologists, received an eczema diagnosis, and tried various treatments, including bleach baths, in search of relief. However, the symptoms persisted. It wasn’t until a doctor ordered a chest X-ray and blood tests that Emma received a diagnosis that would change her life forever.

The Diagnosis: A Life-Changing Moment

Emma still remembers the exact moment her world shifted. After a long theater rehearsal, she walked into her home and immediately sensed something was different. Her house was spotless, her father was making her favorite meal, and her family had gathered for a serious discussion.

Then, the news came: her X-ray showed tumors. She had Hodgkin lymphoma.

Time seemed to freeze. The reality of her diagnosis took a moment to settle in. Fear and uncertainty loomed, but Emma’s fight was just beginning.

Cancer isn’t just a physical battle; it takes a deep emotional and psychological toll, especially on young adults. The fear, uncertainty, and disruption to their future can be overwhelming. Studies show that 40% of childhood cancer survivors experience depression, and 75% struggle with PTSD during or after treatment. Emma’s journey wasn’t just about fighting the disease—it was about finding herself again, rebuilding her dreams, and learning to live beyond the diagnosis.

A Second Fight: Facing Cancer Again

Emma fought through her first battle with incredible strength. But just as she was reclaiming her life, cancer struck again. This time, she knew what was coming—the treatments, the exhaustion, the emotional rollercoaster. Yet, she faced it head-on, determined to emerge stronger than before.

If you’re gonna relapse, there’s only one positive: You know how to do it better this time.” –Emma Lande (from – Conquer Cancer, The ASCO Foundation)

The Role of Research: Hope for the Future

Emma’s story underscores the critical role of cancer research in saving lives. In a heartfelt episode of Your Stories: Conquering Cancer, Emma shares her extraordinary journey alongside her oncologist, Dr. Molly Taylor, a Conquer Cancer-funded researcher. Their conversation highlights the advancements in cancer treatment that made Emma’s survival possible and the importance of continued investment in research.

A Legacy of Strength and Inspiration

Emma’s story is more than just a tale of survival; it is a message of hope for young adults facing adversity. She continues to advocate for cancer awareness, encouraging others to seek medical attention when something feels off, lean on their support systems, and never lose sight of hope.

“Don’t let the bad days win. You can have good days. You can have bad days. But it’s about not letting those hard days win.” – Emma Lande (from – Conquer Cancer, The ASCO Foundation)

Her journey is a powerful reminder that cancer does not define a person—it is their strength, resilience, and determination that truly shape their legacy.
