Efforts to Improve Early Cancer Detection in Low-Resource Settings – UICC

Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Efforts to improve early cancer detection have been gaining momentum in low-resource settings, particularly for lung cancer, which remains one of the hardest cancers to diagnose early. Thanks to UICC members in Egypt and Kenya, progress is being made through innovative solutions and dedicated efforts.
In Kenya, the International Cancer Institute (ICI) is tackling the challenge with mobile screening units, public education, and training healthcare workers, according to Prof Fredrick Chite Asirwa, CEO of ICI. ‘We’re focusing on capacity building, improving infrastructure, and increasing awareness about the importance of early detection.’
In Egypt, Dr Khaled Kamal, Chair of the Executive Committee for the Presidential Initiative for Cancer Screening and Early Detection, highlights the integration of AI technology in routine chest x-rays for more effective early-stage lung cancer detection. ‘We have incorporated AI programmes to revise scans routinely done in chest hospitals,’ says Dr Kamal. Their digital questionnaire and targeted screening also help ensure people at high risk are identified and referred for testing.
These efforts are crucial to overcoming the challenges of limited resources and infrastructure, and they’re helping save lives in communities that need it most.
The work of ICI and Egypt’s cancer initiative shows that with the right focus on capacity building, public awareness, and the integration of advanced technologies, early cancer detection can become a reality even in the most challenging environments.
Together, these efforts show what can be achieved when we invest in people, technology, and public health.”
