David Wakeling: Alice’s Arc’s new research grant to some of the best minds in US paediatric cancer research
David Wakeling, Global Head of AI Advisory Practice at A&O Shearman, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“$750,000– Alice’s Arc’s new research grant to some of the best minds in US paediatric cancer research led by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and St. Baldrick’s Foundation.
- 40- the number of Arcs under the Alice’s Arc children’s cancer charity, each Arc representing a different patient family in the UK (Alice’s Arc, a registered CIO) or US (Alice’s Arc US, Inc).
- £4.5 million- raised to date by Alice’s Arc to fund research in the UK, Europe, and now the US.
- 4- continents in the world where resources or expertise have come together to make this happen.
- 10- years Alice’s Arc has been going.
- 8- percent, being the survival rate at the point of relapse from rhabdomyosarcoma.
- 0- deaths per annum before we give up, endless is our resolve.
- 13 – how old Alice, our eldest daughter would be if she were alive today had she not died aged 7.
- 97- the percentage of funds going on research because 100% is how much we depend on the kindness of our volunteers and donors. There aren’t many charities in the world that are more cost-effective than us.
About Alice’s Arc: My wife, Sara Wakeling (Craddock), and I founded Alice’s Arc, a children’s cancer charity, in honour of our eldest daughter Alice who passed away 5 years ago from rhabdomyosarcoma.
About the Arcs: To grow in a sustainable way, we created the Arcs concept as an innovative approach to managing a fairly simple problem. Most scientific research is funded by small family charities running on passion but with very limited resources and with founding families operating in tragic circumstances. Individually, the charities are too small to fund a breakthrough scientific research project.
There had to be a better way of pooling resources to make a bigger impact. The Arcs allow other families of children diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma to create their own Arc – a space in the name of their child, to tell their story and drive their own fundraising. Funds raised are given to Alice’s Arc, meaning resources are pooled and we can fund the breakthrough research.
If you want to join our community of rhabdomyosarcoma families – to talk to other families about things we cannot convey in numbers, contact us via LinkedIn or via our website.
For Alice. For the Arcs children. For all children and their families suffering with rhabdomyosarcoma.”
