Danielle Carnival: It has been a privilege to lead President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden’s priority on cancer

Danielle Carnival, Deputy Assistant to the President for the Cancer Moonshot, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Leading President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden’s priority on cancer during the Biden-Harris Administration and for most of the last 9 years has been a privilege.

Thanks to all who brought joy to the work every day (too many to name but to start Arati Prabhakar, Mala Adiga, Anabella Aspiras, Catharine Young, Kathryn Kundrod, Jackson Frost, Travis Craig Hyams, Kamal Menghrajani, Erica Kimmerling, Asal Sayas, Catherine Oakar, Jackie McGuinness, Andres Anzola, Subhan Cheema, Asad Ramzanali.

I look forward to the next opportunity to continue the mission to improve American health outcomes. Here is the note I sent to community that rallied around us:

‘Our work has been about ending cancer as we know it – to deliver on the bold but achievable goals the President and First Lady set for us: to cut the cancer death rate by at least half by 2047, preventing more than four million cancer deaths, and to improve the experience of people living with and surviving cancer.

And because of the more than 125 new government actions and new commitments from more than 250 companies, nonprofits, academic institutions, and patient groups – we are on track to do just that.

We’ve made extraordinary investments to prevent cancer – including protecting 100 million Americans from exposure to PFAS (so-called forever chemicals) and taking action to decrease smoking, the single largest driver of cancer deaths;

We’ve extended cancer screenings to more communities – recovering from 10 million missed screenings during the COVID-19 pandemic with a focus on equity;

We realized the President’s vision for a new health outcomes-drive research agency in ARPA-H and drove across the board investment and innovation to reach more people and communities with breakthrough advances;

We delivered the first-ever reimbursable navigation services—impacting millions of Americans facing cancer and other serious illness, and improved access and affordability of cancer care for all Americans.

Many of you started on this mission long before we had a dedicated team at the White House and the personal commitment of a President and First Lady. But you recognized this moment and this opportunity to accelerate the impact of your efforts by joining forces with the Biden Cancer Moonshot. For that I will forever be thankful.

Because as we move from this building, the Biden Cancer Moonshot will continue in the work that you carry on.

And it must – because we have given people hope.

  • Real hope grounded in new understanding of these diseases.
  • Real hope grounded in new ways to treat cancer.
  • Real hope in action to prevent more cancers and protect American’s health.
  • Real hope in reaching and supporting more people with the care they need and deserve.
  • Real hope in improved health, better outcomes, and lives extended and saved.

But we all know there is still more work to do. We will continue building a world where the word ‘cancer’ loses its power.

Together we can end cancer as we know it.’ ”
