Carmen Uscatu: How to Feel Uncomfortable and Still Change the World
Carmen Uscatu, Founding Member and President of Give Life, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“How to Feel Uncomfortable and Still Change the World
It started with a question:
‘What if we could really change the perception of cancer among children and their parents? What if we could change the quality of care for our children with cancer?’
After we saw that in Western European countries, the survival rate is above 80% and the quality of care is so good, we started to ask:
‘What are we missing that we can’t have the same?’
We discovered that what’s missing is a place in Romania where children can have all the medical services in one place. And we built and equipped a hospital for this. Now we have the infrastructure. What’s next?
To transform the multidisciplinary infrastructure into a comprehensive approach in which you combine medical services with supportive care. And a culture of quality improvement in which you identify problems and fix them. In teams. With multiple stakeholders together: medical teams, administrative teams, authorities, universities, sponsors, donors, and everything around and together with children and their families.
Is it possible?
I can tell you: it is possible.
We have the tools: academic knowledge that I gained during my Master’s in Global Child Health at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, international partners: St. Jude and Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology that guide us.
And we, Dăruiește Viață and medical teams at Marie Curie Children Hospital, have the energy to move mountains.
We. We. We.
Let’s do the work.”
