Dégi László Csaba: Unveiling disparities in cancer care – a comparative study of service availability in LMICs vs HICs
Dégi László Csaba, President of the European Cancer Organisation, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Excited to share our latest publication in the official journal of the International Psycho-Oncology Society (IPOS): Journal of Psychosocial Oncology Research and Practice!
Our article, “Unveiling disparities in cancer care: a comparative study of service availability in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) versus high-income countries (HICs)”, sheds light on the significant disparities in supportive care services available for cancer patients and survivors worldwide.
Key findings include:
– HCPs from LMICs reported fewer services addressing unmet needs related to sexuality/intimacy and financial concerns compared to HICs.
– Counseling and psychotherapy remain the most provided services globally, but LMICs significantly lag in offering self-help materials and pharmacological support.
– Critical gaps in care across LMICs emphasize the urgent need for targeted interventions to improve equity in cancer care services.
We hope this research inspires new strategies and policies to bridge the gap and enhance care for cancer patients globally.
Thank you to my amazing co-authors, Ashley Wei-Ting Wang, Cristiane Decat Bergerot, Ozan Bahcivan, and Youngmee Kim, for their collaboration on this important work.
