Barbara Ewals: The Power of SDG Partnerships – A Decisive Factor in Achieving the 2030 Agenda
Barbara Ewals, Chief Executive Officer at SIOG, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“The Power of SDG Partnerships: A Decisive Factor in Achieving the 2030 Agenda.
In 2015, the world came together to adopt the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – a bold, shared vision for a better future. While this agenda set the course, nearly a decade later, one thing has become increasingly clear: no single entity – government, business, or civil society – can achieve these goals alone.
This is where UN- SDG 17, Partnerships for the Goals, plays a transformative role. Unlike the 2015 Agenda, which focused on setting global aspirations, today’s focus must be on strengthening collaboration, mobilizing resources, and scaling impact through meaningful partnerships.
In 2017, I was honored to be invited by United Nations ESCAP and UN University – Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability – as one of the validating experts for their Guidelines for Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships to Implement the 2030 Agenda. These guidelines were later published and unveiled at the United Nations ESCAP Asia-Pacific Forum for Sustainable Development 2018. One of the key differences between the UN 2015 Agenda (Millennium Development Goals) and the UN 2030 Agenda (Sustainable Development Goals) is Partnerships. The SDGs recognize that sustainable development cannot be achieved in silos. Strong, cross-sector partnerships are essential to tackling global challenges.
- Cross-Sector Collaboration: Governments, businesses, NGOs, and academia must unite, leveraging their unique strengths.
- Financing for Development: Innovative funding models – blending public and private capital – are critical to bridging the SDG financing gap.
- Technology & Knowledge Sharing: From AI-driven climate solutions to open data initiatives, innovation thrives when knowledge flows across sectors.
- Localizing Impact: True progress happens when global partnerships empower local communities with tailored, sustainable solutions.
With just five years left until 2030, the urgency for meaningful SDG partnerships has never been greater. Now is the time to move from ambition to action, turning collaboration into measurable impact.
How do you see partnerships driving SDG success in your sector? Let’s connect and exchange ideas.”
