Karan Cushman: Arif Kamal’s Personal Journey that Led Him to Palliative Care and Oncology
Karan Cushman, Chief Vision Officer at Cushman Creative, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Behind every cancer journey is a story.
This one shaped a calling and a career devoted to helping others live MORE and BETTER days.
Years before he became Chief Patient Officer at the American Cancer Society, Dr. Arif Kamal was a teenager helping care for his mom through metastatic breast cancer.
“It became really clear through her journey that the experience matters—and that there are outcomes even more compelling than time or survival.”
In this deeply moving 60-minute episode of the Precision Medicine Podcast, Dr. Kamal shares with me how his personal journey led him to palliative care and oncology, and how that experience informs the work he’s doing today to ensure care is not only effective, but compassionate and equitable.
We talk about what it means to live and support people living with cancer.
And why, if we’re serious about “Bringing Precision Medicine to Everyone,” (as our new series aims) it must be paired with compassion to truly change the odds.
Hope you’ll listen to the full conversation, especially the last 15.
Love to know your thoughts.”
