Arif Kamal: Helping People Better Understand Palliative Care is Key
Arif Kamal, Chief Patient Officer of American Cancer Society, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Palliative care has been described in many ways: “an extra layer of support” and “the care people expect” both come to mind.
My colleague Camilla Zimmermann wrote in JAMA back in 2022, “Palliative Care Is the Umbrella, Not the Rain—A Metaphor to Guide Conversations in Advanced Cancer”. This is an article (and metaphor) I keep in my “foundational articles in palliative care” library.
In a recent sit down with a patient, I found that weather-related analogies do often resonate. Here in North Carolina, I sometimes compare palliative care conversations to preparing for a hurricane that may or may not make landfall.
Overall, helping people better understand palliative care – with analogies, metaphors, or colloquialisms that speak to them – is key. As so much of serious illness care across all diseases is improved when we see it as a team sport.”
