Andras Kulja: Honored to host the ICCD 2025 policy event

Andras Kulja, Member of the European Parliament, shared on LinkedIn:

Yesterday, on World Cancer Day, I had the honor of hosting the International Childhood Cancer Day 2025 policy event “Cross-border access to care, research and training” “Reducing inequalities for children with cancer” at the European Parliament, with the participation of SIOP Europe, the European Society for Paediatric Oncology (SIOPE)and Childhood Cancer International – Europe.

As a doctor, I have seen firsthand what a difference timely diagnosis, high-quality treatment, and emotional support can make in a child’s fight against cancer. But too often, access to these essential elements depends not on medical needs, but on geography. This should never be the case.

Childhood cancer knows no borders—and neither should access to care. Yet, in Europe today, the survival rate differs by 20% between Eastern and Western regions. This is unacceptable.

Our discussions focused on reducing inequalities in pediatric oncology, ensuring that all children—no matter where they live—have access to cutting-edge treatments, innovative research, and specialized care.
We explored cross-border collaboration to remove the barriers that limit access to life-saving therapies.
We highlighted the importance of a holistic approach to childhood cancer care, including the right to play and participate in artistic activities in hospitals

No child should have to fight cancer alone, without the best possible care.
We need action, not just discussion. Investing in equal access to childhood cancer care across Europe is not just a policy decision—it is a moral obligation. Let’s make childhood cancer survival a universal right, not a privilege.
