Protecting a Bipartisan Legacy: Advancing Cancer Research, Saving Lives, Securing the Future – AACI
AACI (Association of American Cancer Institutes) shared a post on LinkedIn:
“This morning AACI co-hosted a congressional briefing with American Association for Cancer Research, “Protecting a Bipartisan Legacy: Advancing Cancer Research, Saving Lives, Securing the Future.”
Thank you to speakers and panelists Dr. Roy Herbst, Yale Cancer Center; House Cancer Caucus Co-Chair Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL); AACI President Dr. Rob Winn, VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center; Dr. John Carpten, City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center; and patient advocates Meghan Lowell, Wilmot Cancer Institute; and Vanessa Brandon, Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center.
“Since 1991, the cancer death rate in the United States has dropped by 34%. And I can tell you that’s not because we’ve been eating more kale. It’s because we’ve achieved life-saving breakthroughs that once seemed impossible. We are detecting cancers earlier, sometimes before symptoms appear. We are reprogramming immune cells to target tumors. We are matching treatments to the molecular fingerprints of each cancer…
…These are not theoretical advances. They are saving lives. And they are only possible because Congress made a bipartisan commitment to research that has lasted for decades.
More than 18 million cancer survivors are alive in the United States today. That is not a coincidence. It is the result of federal investment through NIH and NCI. But that progress is under threat.” – Dr. Robert A. Winn.”
AACI emphasized the life-saving impact of sustained federal investment in cancer research during a joint congressional briefing with AACR. The event featured expert insights and personal testimonies advocating for continued bipartisan support.
