“How hard is it to ‘see’ the person being treated for cancer and focus on their emotional wellbeing? It is hard when you are responsible for administering powerful Proton Therapy beams accurately and safely.
I met the man in these pictures yesterday receiving his 22nd dose of Proton Therapy and the Radiation Therapist delivering the dose who you see watching the patient during treatment.
The clinical innovations are exciting. This FDA approved Adaptive Proton Therapy is delivering the beam with the patient sitting up, as well as supine if needed. It’s cheaper because it can be tailored to fit into most existing bunkers. It’s adaptive because a CT scan is built in. It does less damage to organs at risk. Side effects are reduced in intensity. Children can be treated. Currently this system is treating Head and Neck, Brain, Lung and Spinal cancers.
All this was a wonder to see first hand. But the warmth of the care for the patient impressed me as much as the technical wizardry.
