Laura Bukavina: Our 2nd urology surgical mission to Ukraine was a success
Laura Bukavina, Urologic Oncologist at Cleveland Clinic, shared a post on X/Twitter:
”Our 2nd urology surgical mission to Ukraine was a success. The trip, as always was unbelievable with incredible Ukrainian physicians eager to learn, grateful patients, and the beauty of Ukraine and its people. A special gratitude to my friends and colleagues, Andrew Drozd, Shubham Gupta, and Tanya Gabiak, for their dedication in working 16-hour shifts throughout the week to complete 13 complex surgeries.
Cases included combination of trauma and oncology related reconstruction with 2 rectourethral fistula repairs with gracilis and vram flaps, 6 urethroplasties with buccal and gracilis, penile skin grafts, lap nephrectomy, open partial, and reimplant with proas, plus cx with conduit.
Our patients were truly remarkable, often waiting years for their surgeries. Being able to offer them the opportunity to move forward with their lives is all one could hope for.
Our colleagues in Ukraine have now become our friends. Words cannot adequately express how incredible it is to collaborate for our top priority: our patients and their quality of life.
And lastly, a warm welcome to my beautiful city of Lviv. The people, culture, and beauty continue to amaze me.
None of this would be possible without all of you supporting us , our institutions University Hospitals Urology Institute, Cleveland Clinic Urology as well as Cleveland Maidan, MedWish International, GURS (Society of Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons), American College of Surgeons, American Urological Association, European Association of Urology (EAU), American Cancer Society.
Until next time!”
