Isabel Mestres: Global Health Is Shifting. Are We Ready to Shift With It?
Isabel Mestres, CEO of the City Cancer Challenge (C/Can), shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Global Health Is Shifting. Are We Ready to Shift With It?
After a week immersed in the Executive Program in Politics & Diplomacy for Health (Stockholm School of Economics and Karolinska Institutet), I’ve come back with perspective: not just on global health, but on the political, diplomatic, and human dynamics that shape everything we try to do.
Working on cancer every day, it’s easy to focus narrowly. This week zoomed me out, challenged me to see the bigger picture, sit with uncomfortable truths, and rethink where global health is headed.
Alongside 28 brilliant fellows from 23 countries and an exceptional group of faculty led by Gunilla Carlsson and Anders Nordström, we took a hard, honest look at the future of our field.
What became clear is this: the field isn’t collapsing, but it is being reshaped:
We don’t need to start over – we need to reform what exists to make it work better, faster, fairer.
Regions are no longer waiting – they’re leading, negotiating, building power from the ground up.
Health has moved beyond ministries of health – it’s now the business of foreign affairs, finance, trade, and security.
Multilateralism is under pressure – but new forms of collaboration are emerging. They may not look like the multilateralism we’re used to, but they’re getting things done.
Real change takes perseverance – not declarations, not performative noise, but the kind of staying power that builds trust, reforms systems, and sees things through.
To my fellow participants : thank you for every insight, question, and shared moment of hope, doubts and fun.
To the faculty: thank you for showing up with clarity and courage.”
