Moawia Mohammed Ali Elhassan: Cancer treatment amid armed conflict – Challenges and urgent needs in Sudan
Moawia Mohammed Ali Elhassan, Associate Professor at the University of Gezira, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Cancer treatment amid armed conflict: Challenges and urgent needs in Sudan
The ongoing armed conflict in Sudan has created an unprecedented healthcare crisis, with cancer care facing particularly devastating challenges. Our recent study, published at Journal of Cancer Policy, sheds light on the dire situation.
Our findings, drawn from 100 patients from conflict-affected regions, reveal alarming statistics:
89% faced chemotherapy interruptions, primarily due to displacement and transportation barriers.
Essential cancer medicines were frequently unavailable, despite some international donations.
Despite government coverage for essential medicines, patients and their families bear a heavy financial burden, averaging $900 per chemotherapy cycle for out-of-stock drugs, transportation, and accommodation.
Compounding these issues are staff shortages and critically limited infrastructure.
These findings demand urgent interventions. To mitigate the conflict’s impact, prioritization is needed for:
Strengthening medication supply chains.
Expanding treatment capacity.
Providing crucial financial and logistical support.
The resilience of Sudanese healthcare professionals and patients is truly commendable, but they cannot face this crisis alone. The global community must act swiftly to ensure these vulnerable individuals receive the life-saving care they desperately need.”
