Ishtar Espejo: Breaking barriers – strategies for achieving equity and access in pediatric oncology care
Ishtar Espejo, Director at the Aladina Foundation, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“I’ve just returned from Amman, where I had the opportunity to speak at the 4th Scientific Congress of POEM Group.
My participation was in the roundtable “Breaking barriers: strategies for achieving equity and access in pediatric oncology care”, where I shared the panel with Sima Jeha (St. Jude), Giuseppe Troisi (WHO), Maya Assaad (BASMA) and Nisreen Qatamish (KHCF), moderated by my dear friend Gevorg Tamamyan.
I also had the opportunity to visit the King Hussein Cancer Foundation and Center, the region’s most important oncology center, with which Fundación Aladina has been collaborating for several years. An impressive center that provides free treatment to hundreds of children without resources and refugees. Our contribution helps refugee children access the best possible cancer treatment. Three intense days with professionals from 36 countries, sharing strategies to ensure that all children with cancer, regardless of where they live, have access to quality treatment.
The message is clear: no organization can do it alone. International collaboration is essential to bridge the childhood cancer survival gap between high and low-income countries. At Fundación Aladina, we share the vision of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital – ALSAC and other international organizations: every child diagnosed with cancer should have access to quality care and treatment, regardless of their geographic location or economic status.”
