Carmen Uscatu: The change you want to see
Carmen Uscatu, Founding Member and President of Give Life Foundation, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“The change you want to see.
Master’s in Global Child Health at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
From September 2024 through May 2025, I have been working on my master’s thesis. Today and tomorrow, I’m reviewing Chapters 1, 2, and 3 based on feedback from my thesis committee. My focus is on creating a patient-centered model where children receive comprehensive care that addresses both their medical and emotional needs.
Why am I doing this? In Europe, the five-year survival rate has soared to over 80% thanks to a comprehensive care approach. However, with more survivors, there is now a need to address the long-term effects of life-saving treatments.
Their challenge lies in reducing treatment-related complications while maintaining high survival rates.
In Romania, we face a different challenge: our healthcare system is fragmented, lacking a comprehensive approach that integrates all necessary services (chemotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy) alongside supportive services (psychosocial and palliative care).
The absence of such centers means that children in Romania experience lower survival rates and a diminished quality of life compared to their counterparts in Western European countries.
That’s why Give Life is dedicated to establishing a comprehensive center for childhood cancer with a patient-centered approach at Marie Curie Children Hospital. Let’s work together to boost survival rates from 70% to 81%.
