Julie McCrossin: When to get the HPV vaccine?

Julie McCrossin, Journalist, Broadcaster and Podcaster, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Practical tip for World Cancer Day. Make sure all children in your family get the HPV vaccination.

When to get the HPV vaccine?

The benefits of HPV vaccines are greatest when given before exposure to the virus. This is why in Australia we give the vaccine to young people in early high school before they become sexually active.

In Australia a single dose of the HPV vaccine (Gardasil®9) is funded under the National Immunisation Program for adolescents aged 12 to 13.

Adolescents who missed the HPV vaccination at 12 to 13 years of age can catch up for free up to age 26.

ENT Surgeon Dr Richard Gallagher is with me in this photo. He diagnosed my HPV-related throat cancer and with my Radiation Oncologist Dr Stephen Cooper and a multidisciplinary team treated my cancer and guided my recovery.

The HPV vaccine prevents cervical cancer and helps to prevent the other HPV- related cancers on the diagram.

Please help the next generations to avoid the trauma of these cancers by getting the HPV vaccine.
