Former Disney CEO Bob Chapek Appointed Senior Adviser at SCAN Group

Long Beach-based SCAN Group, a senior-focused health care nonprofit, has appointed former Walt Disney Co.

CEO Bob Chapek as a senior adviser. Chapek’s role is aimed at enhancing SCAN’s member acquisition strategies and improving member experiences. This appointment follows a significant legal win for SCAN, which successfully overturned a Medicare rating drop that had been imposed by the federal Medicare agency, potentially saving the organization around $250 million in quality bonus payments.

SCAN, which operates a Medicare Advantage plan and stands for Senior Care Action Network, is undergoing significant expansion both in terms of geographic reach and services. The organization is now extending its homeless services program to all of Los Angeles County, broadening its impact beyond senior citizens.

Bob Chapek’s decision to join SCAN Group as a senior adviser came through a fortuitous personal connection. Both he and SCAN CEO Sachin Jain had served together on the national board of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which led to their professional relationship. After Chapek left Disney and Jain took the reins at SCAN, Jain reached out to Chapek in September, asking if he would be willing to offer his expertise as a paid adviser, particularly in areas of customer acquisition and retention.

Chapek, who spent over three decades at Disney, was intrigued by the challenge despite his limited experience in healthcare. Noting his familiarity with customer engagement in entertainment, but acknowledging that healthcare was a new frontier for him. His primary role at SCAN will be to help streamline the messaging around the company’s Medicare Advantage plans, which are part of a crowded market of nearly 4,000 plans offered by major insurers like Aetna, Cigna, and Kaiser Permanente, as well as numerous smaller regional players.

Chapek’s goal is to make it easier for seniors to navigate the complexity of Medicare Advantage options and understand the benefits of SCAN’s offerings. In addition, he’ll focus on improving member retention by addressing any obstacles that might prevent members from accessing the healthcare services they need. Chapek will spend about 15-20 hours per month on this advisory role, working closely with Jain to refine SCAN’s market positioning and overall customer experience.

Although the exact details of his compensation were not disclosed, Chapek’s involvement is seen as a significant step for SCAN as they look to sharpen their competitive edge in the Medicare Advantage space. His background in consumer-focused brand building, combined with Jain’s leadership at SCAN, could help the company navigate the complexities of healthcare enrollment and enhance its appeal to potential members.
