A major step forward in introducing a national lung cancer screening programme – Lung Cancer Europe

“More good news about the Screening of Lung Cancer in Europe (SOLACE) initiative, this time from Germany which has taken a major step forward in introducing a national lung cancer screening programme.
It now joins a list of countries moving towards the introduction of low-dose CT (LDCT) lung screening programmes which include the USA, Canada, Australia, China, South Korea, Croatia, Poland and the Czech Republic.

In an interview with the AuntMinnieEurope.com website, Professor Marie-Pierre Revel from the SOLACE project, said: ‘Another European country moving towards implementation is a very good sign.’
Lung cancer screening has the potential to diagnose the disease at an earlier point, improving treatment options and survival rates. In 2019, Germany had over 63,000 new cases of lung cancer diagnosed in the year and around 53,900 deaths from the disease, according to the International Respiratory Coalition’s Lung Facts.

The Screening of Lung Cancer in Europe (SOLACE) initiative is a pioneering new EU4Health project under the Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan. It will facilitate the provision of lung cancer screening programmes by breaking down the barriers to accessing them.”

“To successfully cure lung cancer, we have to find it earlier. Screening programs are a key element of this for our high risk populations. We also need to rethink screening in those with no risk factors as oncogene-driven lung cancers can strike anyone. Taking this first step is a great start. “
