The transcript of Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu’s speech.

Hello my dear colleagues, advocates and friends. My journey with the UICC started six years ago when you elected me to the board in the World Cancer Congress in Kuala Lumpur. Since then you have voted for me two more times.

I am now here to ask for your continued support that you vote me as the president-elect in the next General Assembly in October 2024. Aside from my personally engaging as many of you as individuals as well as your organizations, I have contributed to many of the UICC’s objectives as chair of the Knowledge, Advocacy and Policy Committee, an active member of the Access to Oncology Medicine Task Force and so many other committees like the Summit and Congress, Membership as well as Governance. I have participated and contributed to many UICC activities, publications and reports, some of which focus on your member activities.

In 2022, IAC’s reports showed us that there were 20 million new cancer cases globally along with 9.7 million deaths. Lung and breast cancer were the most common. By 2050, this is predicted to increase to 35 million new cancer cases with double the mortality rates, the burden of which lies in low middle income countries in the global south.

If you support me and vote for me as your president-elect, I will focus on closing the global inequities in cancer by building more partnerships between our members from the high and the low income countries. Together, we will push advocacy to expand membership of the UICC and ensure that the agenda of the organization is shared far and wide. I will be active about fundraising that will support member activities and impact in their communities.

I urge you to vote for a president that is reachable, approachable and capable. That president is me and my name Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu. Thank you.
