Carmen Monge-Montero: Highlights from my first week in the Africa Elevate Program with A Fresh Chapter

“Dear Network,
I’m excited to share some highlights from my first week in the Africa Elevate Program with A Fresh Chapter. This incredible cross-cultural program brings together people affected by cancer from Kenya, the U.S., and Costa Rica. We started in Eldoret, where we collaborated on a presentation for the Africa Cancer Summit, focusing on advocating for policy change.
We had a powerful Storytelling for Impact workshop to sharpen our advocacy skills, visited the AMPATH Kenya program and MTRH hospital, including the Chandaria Cancer Centre, and explored the Creation Hive, a craft and business training social enterprise supporting individuals affected by cancer, HIV, and other chronic illnesses. One of the most meaningful experiences was learning how the CHAMA for Change project empowers women through health, social, and financial education.
The most valuable part has been connecting with 15 incredible fellows from Eli Lilly and Company, patients, and the AFC staff. Together, we’re preparing materials for the first AFC Summit.
Next week, I’ll share more about our experiences in Nairobi and the Summit itself. Stay tuned!”
