“A cancer diagnosis marks the beginning of a journey that goes far beyond physical impact.
The need for targeted psychological support, provided by a specialized figure, clearly emerges from the testimonies of the patients themselves through a survey released by Psiconcologia.net, a space dedicated to the culture and understanding of psycho-oncology aimed at professionals and institutions, patients and caregivers.
In fact, over 89% of respondents consider the psychological support service useful, but only 16% declare a constant and continuous presence of a Psycho-oncologist in his/her own reference structure.
“For cancer patients, it is not only important to extend their lives in terms of time, but also that this time is of quality.
This is why it is essential to offer support so that these people can also take care of themselves on a psychological and emotional level,” says Gabriella Pravettoni, director of the IEO Division of Psycho-Oncology, professor of Decision Psychology at the State University of Milan and founder of Psiconcologia.net.
This figure makes us understand how important it is to offer all the necessary tools to better deal with the disease.
The Psycho-Oncology Service is active at IEO which, in close contact with the care team, supports the patient in managing emotions and becoming aware of their treatment path in order to actively participate in therapeutic choices.
