Michelle Mitchell: CRUK Scotland Institute Celebrates 50 Years of Cancer Research and Innovation

Michelle Mitchell, Chief Executive at Cancer Research UK, shared on LinkedIn:

“Today we’re celebrating half a century of world-leading cancer research at our Cancer Research UK Scotland Institute in Glasgow. In that time, the Institute and our brilliant people who work there have helped transform our understanding of how cancers develop, grow and spread.

With around 34,800 people diagnosed with cancer in Scotland alone each year, finding new ways to tackle the disease is vital. To make the next breakthroughs, our researchers are embracing a new era of AI research, accelerating discoveries that could lead to earlier diagnosis and more effective treatments.

Importantly, artificial intelligence won’t replace scientists, but it has the potential to supercharge discovery by helping our researchers uncover insights hidden within vast amounts of data. From understanding how cancers develop to identifying new ways to diagnose and treat them, AI could help unlock breakthroughs that ultimately save more lives.

We’re committed to investing in people, technology and ideas that will drive the future of cancer research and I’m really excited to see what brilliant discoveries the team at the Scotland Institute can make in the years to come.

Thank you to the whole Scotland Institute team and to Professor Owen Sansom for your leadership.”
