We’re highlighting Imani’s story and her full circle moment from pediatric Blood Cancer patient to nurse – The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society shared a post on Linkedin:

“‘I was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) on my 11th birthday after experiencing months of nosebleeds that lasted for hours. Throughout my treatments, which included radiation and chemotherapy leading up to a bone marrow transplant, it was the nurses who stood by me. They educated my family and me, providing hope and entertainment during the challenging weeks.

Fast forward to the present, I have achieved my Bachelor of Science in Nursing. The inspiration I drew from the nurses who cared for me compelled me to pursue this path. My final clinical rotation brought me full circle to a pediatric oncology floor, offering a unique perspective from the opposite side.

Now, as I stand on the threshold of my career, I am thrilled to embark on this journey. My aspiration is to mirror the positive impact my nurses had on me during that challenging period of my life and provide the same level of care to my patients.’

On MDS Awareness Day, we’re highlighting Imani’s story and her full circle moment from pediatric Blood Cancer patient to nurse. Imani isn’t alone. Between 2015 and 2019, there were 77,646 new MDS cases in the US, averaging 15,529 cases per year. Despite ongoing challenges, we’re leading the way in transforming MDS treatment, both today and tomorrow.”
