Roupen Odabashian reflects on 2025 JAMA study evaluating AI-generated discharge summaries

Roupen Odabashian, Hematology/Oncology Fellow at the Karmanos Cancer Institute, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“The administrative tasks are being managed by AI in the hospital! But you still need a human in the loop (for now).
This is an interesting study published in JAMA on the accuracy of discharge summaries generated by AI.
The results are good, but it shows that AI can generate good discharge summaries with non-harmful errors.
However, one thing I would have done differently in this study is to make the prompt simpler; just tell the model you want a discharge summary.
From my experience and reading the newsletters of Andrew Ng, the simpler the prompt you give to the LLM, the better the output.”
