Zuzana Santamaria on ESGO’s Cervical Cancer Awareness Campaign

Zuzana Santamaria, Project Manager at European Society of Gynaecological Oncology, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Changing country policies in cervical cancer prevention is not easy.

The World Health Organization set its Cervical Cancer Elimination Strategy goals in 2020, aiming at:

Vaccination: 90% of girls vaccinated against HPV by age 15
Screening: 70% of women screened by 35 and again by 45
Treatment: 90% of pre-cancer cases treated; 90% of invasive cancers managed

Despite worldwide consensus among clinicians on the steps needed to eliminate cervical cancer, 350 000 women worldwide die of this preventable cancer.

Awareness about symptoms empowers women to ask.

We are nearing the end of the Cervical Cancer Awareness Month.

Cecilia, the virtual cancer guide created by ESGO ENGAGe experts Tóth Icó, Kim Hulscher, Mette J. Dischington, Anne De Middelaer, Vasanthi James, Charlotte Dybvik reminders women of the symptoms of cervical cancer and advises them to get checked if they notice any of the following:

  • Bleeding between periods, after sex, or after menopause
  • Discomfort or pain during intercourse
  • Unusual, smelly or bloody vaginal discharge
  • Persistent pelvic pain

If something doesn’t feel right, trust your body and seek medical advice.

Tell a friend. Share this. It could make a difference.

Thank you to the European Society of Gynaecological Oncology clinicians Murat Gultekin, Houssein El Hajj, Philippe Morice who participated in creation of the campaign.”
