“A historic day for Zambia.
1st August 2026 marks a Historic Milestone for Zambia! Our hearts were filled with immense joy as the refurbished radiotherapy and imaging section of the Cancer Diseases Hospital was officially commissioned by Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, President of the Republic of Zambia.
For five long years, the closure of this facility carried a heavy weight on our nation. As cancer advocates, those years tested us deeply. Encouraging early screening was heartbreakingly tough when people asked: ‘Why should I get screened if there’s no treatment in Zambia?’ but now that long, painful wait finally ended.
Seeing this facility open its doors to treat up to 60 patients a day right here at home proves that our advocacy was not in vain. We feel heard. We feel seen. The millions once spent sending patients abroad will now stay right here – invested directly in improving quality healthcare.
We watched 62-year-old Madam Mauleya Zimba, who is living with cervical cancer, become the very first patient treated with Radiotherapy here in Zambia. Her step forward wasn’t just a medical procedure – she carried the story, the struggle, and the restored hope of thousands of Zambians.
Zambia is now home to one of only three facilities of its kind in Africa, alongside South Africa and Egypt! We are truly becoming a regional center of excellence in cancer care.
To every single cancer patient and family fighting this battle right now: Please hold on. You are not alone.
The treatment is here. The care is here. Hope has been restored.
