Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, UICC President-Elect of 2024-2026, Founder and CEO of the Medicaid Cancer Foundation, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Despite carrying a disproportionate burden of cancer, Black patients account for only about 4–6% of participants in cancer clinical trials. More than 320,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer every year, yet again, Black women remain underrepresented in clinical research.
This is one of the issues I committed to address as UICC president and I wholly commend and support the launch of ‘Niraparib Trial for Advanced Ovarian Cancer’ at ABUTH, Zaria, in collaboration with Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, Miami. Designed specifically for Black women with advanced ovarian cancer, the study will evaluate maintenance Niraparib therapy while providing comprehensive medical monitoring and study-covered treatment.
Research drives progress, and expanding access to clinical trials is essential to improving gynecologic oncology outcomes whilst ensuring that advances in cancer care benefit affected populations. Colleagues with potential candidates are encouraged to contact the study team to initiate screening.
