Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu on Women’s Cancer, Safety, and Support During 16 Days of Activism

Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, UICC President-Elect of 2024-2026 and a Founder and CEO of the Medicaid Cancer Foundation, shared a post on X:

“Sharing this moment from October a bit late. I had a thought provoking conversation with Dr Lola Mabogunje, a senior colleague, sister and of late, a breast cancer survivor.

Dr. Lola carries her challenge with remarkable calm and courage. We spoke about breast cancer, the power of early detection, and the difficult journeys many women still walk in silence.

As we continue to mark 16 Days of Activism, I draw a parallel that the experiences of women living with cancer and those facing gender based violence are often connected. When a woman is unsafe, unheard, or unsupported, her ability to seek care, attend screening, or complete treatment becomes even more fragile.

Similarly, violence in any form affects health, choices, and survival. Both conditions have an enormous effect on Womens mental health, as well as that of those around them- children, friends, neighbors etc.

Our task as advocates includes creating safety, strengthening support, and ensuring that every woman has the freedom to seek care without fear.”
