Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, UICC President-Elect of 2024-2026 and a Founder and CEO of the Medicaid Cancer Foundation, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“The urgency for a coordinated global response to cancer has never been greater. This is one of the reasons we gathered in Melbourne for the World Cancer Leaders’ Summit, a Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) convening event.
The theme, Bridging divides, Building futures, speaks to a lot of issues we navigate as leaders, to achieve equality in care.
Ahead of the summit, I joined colleagues for the UICC Board of Directors Meeting at Cancer Council Victoria, where we deliberated successfully on issues pertaining to the organization and its members.
A pre-summit workshop was organized for UICC grantees from LMICs on a critical prevention priority: HPV vaccination. One key takeaway was the need to counter misinformation through the use of local influencers and community gatekeepers, as opposed to technical experts. The theory of a trusted system was also discussed at length.
The 3-day summit featured sessions ranging from the 4th high-level meeting in New York, advances and barriers in different cancers, and forging relationships across sectors.
The organization and welcome by the Australians, Cancer Council Victoria, etc, was simply stellar! In keeping with observed practice, I also acknowledge and thank the traditional owners of the land on which we gathered, and pay my respects to elders past, present, and emerging.
Looking forward to the next WCLS in 2027, which, as announced, takes place in Nairobi, Kenya. Karibu!”
