Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu: Improving Early Childhood Cancer Detection Rate in LMICs

Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, UICC President-Elect of 2024-2026 and a Founder and CEO of the Medicaid Cancer Foundation, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Every year, more than 400,000 children are diagnosed with cancer and many die due to late detection and limited access to care.

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is over, but we should remain conscious of the urgent need for action.

One of my promises as UICC president is to focus more on improving detection rate in LMICs. Thus, last month in Kebbi State, the mcf kebbi team engaged students of the College of Health Technology, Jega, in an impactful session on early diagnosis, timely referral, and available care pathways. Future health professionals were sensitized on early signs of childhood cancer. We also distributed IEC materials co-created with BIO Ventures for Global Health and The University of Abuja.

By catching them at this stage, they are more likely to champion early detection in their communities. No child should be denied the chance to survive cancer.”
