Zahra Haider: Implementing Liquid Biopsy for Disease Monitoring in Hodgkin Lymphoma

Zahra Haider, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at University Hospital Heidelberg (UKHD), shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Excited to share our latest publication on implementing liquid biopsy for disease monitoring in Hodgkin lymphoma, now published in Blood Cancer Journal!

In this study, we established a fully plasma-based, tumor tissue-independent workflow by performing comprehensive baseline ctDNA genomic profiling to design personalized MRD assays. We then conducted the first head-to-head comparison of two highly sensitive analytical platforms for longitudinal MRD monitoring in Hodgkin lymphoma: targeted NGS and multiplex droplet digital PCR (m-ddPCR).

Key findings in our study:

  •  Comprehensive plasma genomic profiling enabled personalized MRD assay design without tumor tissue.
  •  NGS and m-ddPCR showed high concordance for MRD detection.
  •  Early ctDNA clearance after the first treatment cycle has prognostic significance and predicted patient outcome.

Why does this matter?

Our findings support the implementation of tumor-informed, plasma-based ctDNA MRD assays for highly sensitive longitudinal disease monitoring. By combining high sensitivity with an excellent negative predictive value, these approaches have the potential to guide personalized treatment decisions, identify patients who may safely avoid overtreatment, detect early relapse before clinical manifestation and ultimately improve patient care.
