Zacharoula Sidiropoulou: Day 1 of CNO25 – Future of Oncology into Collaboration

Zacharoula Sidiropoulou, Senior Consultant Breast Surgical Oncologist at Hospital São Francisco Xavier, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Day 1 of CNO25

Future of Oncology into Collaboration: No Silos

As we face a growing shortage of oncology professionals across Europe, with nearly 20,000 oncology professionals missing and vacancy rates exceeding 15% in several countries, one fact emerges: we cannot afford to work in isolation.

The complexity of cancer care necessitates that medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgical oncologists, and allied specialists communicate effectively and seamlessly.

This is why events like the National Oncology Congress, CNO25, organized by the Portuguese Society of Oncology,
SPO are more critical than ever.

CNO offers something rare: genuine opportunities for cross-specialty dialogue. From molecular tumor boards integrating pathology and genomics, to sessions bridging surgical approaches with systemic therapies in lung and breast cancer, to discussions connecting CAR-T innovation with hematology practice, to multidisciplinary approaches in liver tumors and urological cancers, the program naturally creates the connections our field needs.

When a medical oncologist understands the latest advances in radiation techniques, when a surgeon collaborates early with geriatric specialists, when we all speak the same language about emerging biomarkers and precision medicine, our patients win.

But the best professional bonds are forged around a table, sharing a meal and genuine conversation. It’s in these informal moments, over coffee, lunch, or dinner, that we move from colleagues to collaborators. It is in improvised working spaces where brainstorming shines!

With 40% of oncologists approaching retirement age and cancer diagnoses projected to increase by 21% by 2040, building these bridges isn’t just beneficial, it’s essential.

Looking forward to meaningful exchanges at CNO and strengthening the collaborative fabric of Portuguese oncology.”
