Yasir Ya’u Nuhu: Driving Measurable and Sustainable Impact in Cervical Cancer Elimination at NWNCCENS2026

Yasir Ya’u Nuhu, Assistant Secretary of Youth Arm at Nigerian Cancer Society, Executive Co-Founder at FUD Medical Research Society (FUD-MRS, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“I have been privileged to engage in spaces where professionals rigorously discuss diseases. These engagements have taken place across classrooms, clinics and halls over time.

Beyond general discussions, my focus has consistently been on cancer, exploring its full continuum—from clinical history up to follow-up laboratory investigations aimed at preventing recurrence.

To deepen my understanding of cancer as a public health challenge, I attended several national and international scientific engagements. These include: International Cancer Week Conferences in 2023 and 2024 (Kado, Abuja), and in 2025 (Maitama, Abuja, Nigeria), organized annually by the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT), Abuja, with relevant stakeholders.

I listened attentively to rich discussions on cancer pathogenesis, palliative care, and genetic and cellular studies. The depth of knowledge shared was remarkable, and the impact was profound.

However, one critical gap stood out—one that persists even in some advanced health systems: the translation of research evidence into actionable public healthpolicies and strategies that effectively reduce disease burden at the population level.

Reflecting on this gap became a turning point and laid the foundation for the 2026 North-West Nigeria Cervical Cancer Elimination Summit (NWNCCENS2026).

PURPOSE AND EXPECTED IMPACT OF NWNCCENS2026:

The 2026 North-West Nigeria Cervical Cancer Elimination Summit will be held on Wednesday 13th and Thursday 14th May, 2026, in Dutse, Jigawa State.

The summit is designed to drive measurable and sustainable impact through:

  1. Engaging political stakeholders to strengthen commitment to cervical cancer control in Jigawa State and the North-West region
  2. Strengthening public health policies, monitoring systems, and state-level programs, with alignment to national strategies
  3. Advocating for increased government investment and strong political will toward cervical cancer elimination
  4. Building capacity by training 50 healthcare professionals across Jigawa State
  5. Conducting screening for 100 women (aged 40+) using high-risk HPV testing, with VIA triage for positive cases
  6. Enhancing overall knowledge and technical capacity in cervical cancer care across the region

The summit aligns with and supports the WHO 90-70-90 Cervical Cancer Elimination Strategy, while fostering collaboration, partnerships, innovation, and a comprehensive continuum of care.

This is more than a Summit—it is a deliberate step toward bridging the gap between knowledge and action, ensuring that research does not remain theoretical but translates into real, measurable impact for public health utilization and community members in our various societies.”
