Yannick Neuder: Grenoble Alpes University Hospital Achieves a European First in the Fight Against Pancreatic Cancer

Yannick Neuder, Member of Parliament for Isère, former Minister for Health and Access to Healthcare (2024 – 2025), shared a post on LinkedIn:

“A European first. At the CHU Grenoble Alpes.

On Tuesday 22 April, a medical team carried out the first European operation of a new treatment against pancreatic cancer in Isère. Dozens of radioactive titanium rods have been implanted directly into a patient’s tumor, endoscopically, in order to irradiate the disease as close as possible to the cancer cells while preserving nearby organs.

A protocol made possible by researchers from the CNRS, Inserm, the Léon Bérard Center and the Claude Bernard Lyon 1 University. A feat achieved by the teams of my heart university hospital where I work.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most aggressive cancer today. By 2030-2040, it will become the second leading cause of cancer death in our country. This clinical trial will include 40 patients in France. For them and their families, this is tangible hope.

This first is a reminder of a truth that I consistently uphold: France has a public hospital and excellent clinical research. Our political duty is to give them the means to innovate, train and provide care. This is my fight.

My congratulations go in particular to Professor Gaël Roth, digestive oncologist at the University of Grenoble Alpes and the University Hospital, who coordinated the French study and developed this procedure, to Dr. Christelle d’Engremont, hepato-gastroenterologist and digestive oncologist, who performed this first European intervention, as well as to Dr. Pierre-Yves Eyraud, a doctor in hepato-gastroenterology and digestive oncology who was involved in this advance. I also salute all the physicists, nurses and endoscopists involved, as well as our Canadian partners, whose work conducted between 2023 and 2024 paved the way for this progress.”
