Yan Leyfman: Oncology Is Incredibly Fortunate to Have Julie Gralow’s Leadership

Yan Leyfman, Medical Oncologist, Co-Founder and Executive Director of MedNews Week, shared Bishal Gyawali‘s post on X, adding:

“There are leaders who inspire from the podium.

And then there are leaders who inspire in the moments no one sees.

At both ASCO and ASCO Breakthrough, what left the greatest impression on me wasn’t just Dr. Julie Gralow‘s remarkable vision for oncology—it was the way she consistently chose to invest in people.

Despite leading one of the world’s most influential oncology organizations, she made time every day to sit with trainees, share a meal, ask about our aspirations, listen to our stories, and offer thoughtful guidance. Those conversations weren’t rushed or obligatory. They were genuine.

It reminded me that mentorship isn’t simply sharing knowledge. Sponsorship isn’t simply opening doors. Allyship isn’t simply offering support.

It’s making people feel that they belong—that their dreams matter, and that someone believes in them.

As trainees, we often remember the lectures. But years later, we remember even more the people who made us feel seen.

Dr. Gralow embodies the kind of leadership our profession should strive for: brilliant, humble, compassionate, and deeply committed to lifting the next generation.

Thank you, Dr. Gralow, for reminding us that the greatest legacy we leave is not measured only by the papers we publish, the positions we hold, or the awards we receive—but by the people whose lives we quietly change along the way.

Oncology is incredibly fortunate to have your leadership. I know I am grateful to have learned from your example.”

Bishal Gyawali, Medical Oncologist, Professor at Queen’s University, shared a post on X:
