Yan Leyfman: Evaluating Hetrombopag to Reduce Chemotherapy Delays and Dose Modifications in CIT

Yan Leyfman, Medical Oncologist, Co-Founder and Executive Director of MedNews Week, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Congratulations to Dr. Jodi Mones (Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center) and colleagues on the launch of this important global Phase 3 study evaluating hetrombopag for chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia (CIT).

CIT remains one of the most challenging and underrecognized complications of cancer treatment. Low platelet counts frequently force chemotherapy delays, dose reductions, or treatment discontinuation, potentially compromising outcomes for patients who need to stay on therapy.

Current management options are limited, often relying on platelet transfusions—an increasingly constrained resource—or injectable thrombopoietin receptor agonists that can add logistical burden for patients and care teams.

This international trial will evaluate oral hetrombopag, a thrombopoietin receptor agonist designed to stimulate platelet production and help patients maintain planned chemotherapy intensity. Building on encouraging prior randomized data, the study will assess whether hetrombopag can safely restore platelet counts and enable patients to complete consecutive chemotherapy cycles without thrombocytopenia-related delays, dose modifications, or rescue interventions.

If successful, this approach could represent a meaningful advance for supportive cancer care, providing a convenient oral strategy to address a common treatment-limiting toxicity and helping more patients remain on schedule with potentially life-prolonging therapy.

Looking forward to the results of this important study and its potential impact on oncology practice worldwide.”
