“Social media informs most patients with cancer, yet misinformation remains widespread. Recent data from MedNews Week (MNW) illustrate how a volunteer, gender-balanced platform can help address this gap.
Key Findings (Jan 2022–Jun 2023):
- 36 biweekly sessions led by hematology–oncology experts (mean H-index 50)
- 743,991 unique viewers across 95 countries, including 23 LMICs
- 10.5-fold increase in attendance over 18 months • Gender parity among speakers, with comparable engagement across sessions (P = .41)
- Diverse participation: clinicians 40%, patients/advocates 22%, students 18%, others 20%
- Among the highest-ranking healthcare voices on X by influence
Implication: A no-cost, volunteer-driven model with intentional gender balance can deliver reliable oncology education at scale, reach underserved audiences, and counter misinformation across global communities.”
