The First Official World Cervical Cancer Elimination Day of Action on 17 November – UICC

Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Today marks the first official World Cervical Cancer Elimination Day!

With only five years left to achieve the elimination goals set out in the World Health Organization’s Global Strategy, recent analyses show encouraging but uneven progress:

In high-resource settings, Australia, Sweden, Norway, and England are on track to eliminate cervical cancer around 2030-2040, thanks to high HPV vaccination coverage combined with HPV-based screening and effective follow-up and treatment.

In low- and middle-income countries, progress is also being made:

  • Nigeria introduced the HPV vaccine just last year and has already vaccinated 12.3 million girls.
  • Rwanda has maintained over 90% HPV vaccination coverage since 2011, is scaling screening and treatment, and aims to meet the 90-70-90 targets by 2027, three years ahead of schedule.
  • Bhutan became the first country in South-East Asia to reach the elimination targets, doing so in 2024.

These success stories show that elimination is possible with strong political will, investment, and community engagement.
