“JAMA has updated its rules on AI use in medical publishing. The new editorial is worth reading for anyone who writes or reviews scientific papers:
AI may be used for literature searches, manuscript preparation, translation and data visualization, as long as this is disclosed. Grammar and spell checking need no disclosure.
AI may not be used where judgment is at the core of the work: Opinion pieces, Letters to the Editor, peer review, and responses to reviewers. These must be human-inspired. Uploading a manuscript into an external AI tool for review even violates confidentiality.
Using AI for references is discouraged. The JAMA journals keep receiving manuscripts with inaccurate or invented citations.
The principle behind all of this: authors remain fully accountable for every part of their manuscript, including the references. AI can make our work more efficient, but it cannot take responsibility.”
