Wilson Gonsalves: Moment to Reflect on Progress in the Care of Patients with Multiple Myeloma

Wilson Gonsalves, Professor of Medicine, Hematologist, Oncologist at Mayo Clinic, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“World Myeloma Day

Yesterday, we had a moment to reflect-with deep gratitude-on how far we’ve come in the care of patients with multiple myeloma.

Over the past 15 years, I’ve witnessed the landscape of myeloma transform dramatically. What was once a uniformly challenging disease now having an expanding arsenal of therapies, innovative clinical trials, and a growing understanding of its biology. These advances have translated into longer survival, better quality of life, and, most importantly, real hope for our patients and their families.

I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of the Mayo Clinic Rochester Myeloma, Amyloidosis, and Dysproteinemia Disease Group (MAD DG)-a team that is deeply committed to improving outcomes for patients with plasma cell disorders.

What makes this journey truly special is the people.

I am surrounded by extraordinary colleagues who are not only leaders in the field but also trusted collaborators and friends. From our outstanding nursing staff to our dedicated clinical research teams, to our innovative basic science investigators-each member works tirelessly with a shared purpose: to push the boundaries of what is possible for our patients.
I could not have asked for a better environment to pursue meaningful work and contribute to advancing the field.

Above all, I am most grateful for the privilege of being entrusted with the care of patients diagnosed with multiple myeloma. It is an honor to walk alongside them in their journey, and their resilience continues to inspire everything we do.

Here’s to continued progress, collaboration, and hope.
