Wendy Brooks, Lung Cancer Survivor Patient and Advocate, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Some news I am still letting sink in.
I have been accepted into the IASLC STARS Program (Supportive Training for Advocates on Research and Science), a specialized initiative by the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer that trains and supports lung cancer patient research advocates around the world. STARS connects patient voices directly to the scientific research and policy conversations that shape the future of lung cancer care.
And in addition to that, I have been invited to serve as a Research Advocate with the Lung Cancer Research Foundation (LCRF), one of the leading organizations funding the very research that is changing outcomes for patients like me.
Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine my life would take me here.
Three years ago I was diagnosed with limited stage small cell lung cancer, which later progressed to extensive stage. This July I will mark my 3 year cancerversary. On March 7 I celebrated my 60th birthday. And now I get to step into two roles where my voice, my experience, and my advocacy can help shape the future of lung cancer research for every patient who comes after me.
I am beyond grateful. Grateful to my care team, to my family, to the advocates who came before me and lit the path, and to the researchers whose work is the reason I am still here to do this work at all.
To anyone newly diagnosed reading this, your voice matters. Your story matters. And there is a place for you in this fight.
Here we go.”
