“Sadly, many colleagues are experiencing an unfortunate tragic existential threat to their biomedical research programs on US academic campuses. What takes years to build is lost in weeks-months and one is left believing there’s no effective oversight to prevent collapse. I have thought for years that the US can and should do better but it’s proving it can’t or won’t. Hope for a better day in healthcare including for patients with cancer comes from inspiring the next generation, hard work and creativity, not so much from bureaucracy, pharma’s business interests or politics.

His lab was humming with discovery. After one year under Trump, it’s almost silent.
