Wafik El-Deiry on Academic Freedom and the Fight Against Misinformation

Wafik El-Deiry, Director of Legorreta Cancer Center at Brown University and Chair of the WIN Consortium in Cancer Personalized Medicine, shared a post on X:

Online activity is a form of public community outreach, patient advocacy and responsibility that was slowly adopted and remains more on the fringe within the medical community with some exceptions.

I’ve participated continuously since April 2008, joining Twitter and LinkedIn with major emphasis on sharing advances in cancer research and oncology. In 2026, Social Media presence is relevant for careers and reputations, the latter for individuals and institutions. I’ve spoken about social media at multiple AACR meetings to describe the importance and the impact.

There is impact on clinical research in different ways and major impact through learning from others. It is inspiring and I would say invaluable to see leaders in one’s field express views and opinions on various topics. There is an aspect of free speech and academic freedom that is relevant to emerging policies that has to be balanced with professional or institutional risks.

Health misinformation is a hugely important topic that this STAT News article by Dr. Adam Goodcoff discusses. Hospitals are silencing doctors online, and it’s fueling the health misinformation crisis.
